Today’s dad in the #40Days40Dads campaign is someone I never would have met before the existence of social media. And now that I think about it, we’ve still never actually met in person. Tim Cigelske is the social media guru for Marquette University and our paths crossed via a higher education listserv when I was in a similar role for Northwestern University. We have interacted over the years on various social media topics, and now he has shared some wisdom from his time in the dad trenches. Thanks, Tim!
#15: Tim Cigelske
Tim is the father of a 5-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son.
What was the moment when you first felt like a father?
Literally the second Clara was born. It felt tangible.
What’s your favorite part about being a father?
Seeing the world through my kids’ eyes.
What’s the hardest part about being a father?
Lack of sleep.
What’s the dumbest/funniest thing that your kid has cried about or fought with you over?
Oh man, too many to think of just one. You name it, we’ve fought or cried over it.
What are you most proud of having taught/shared with your kids or what are you most looking forward to teaching/sharing with them?
I think I’m more proud of what they’ve taught me–more patience and compassion.
What’s your favorite thing about your kids?
Their enthusiasm and unconditional love–except when my daughter tells me she hates me when I’m getting her ready for school. I know she doesn’t mean it. 🙂
If you could go back in time and give yourself a piece of advice when you first became a father, what would you say?
Practice taking a deep breath often. Be patient.
Any other comments to share on fatherhood?
Here’s something I wrote.
If you’re a father or you know a father who would like to share his story, send him to this link to answer the questions. Stay tuned for another dad’s crib notes tomorrow!
